Does your current bookkeeper act like your business manager? Is she or he based locally and easy to reach? Does your current bookkeeper care about the success of your business? All three answers should be YES!
Here is how to choose your bookkeeper and have them be your business manager.
1. Set up in-person meetings
During the interview process, make sure you meet them at your office. Ensure they are based locally and can meeting with you regularly and face-to-face. Ask them about the breadth of work they do and how long they have been doing this type of work. Collect references and determine if they are a good fit to be your business manager.
2. Share goals and ask for help at the outset
Once hired, have your bookkeeper get to know your business and your goals. Ask them to help you. Share your areas of focus: sales goals? expense reduction areas? Define the specific reports you need to review on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis. Communicate your needs so your bookkeeper can provide you with the information you need to run your business more effectively and efficiently.
3. Keep your bookkeeper close to your business
Include them as part of your team. Link them with key members of your staff, have them meet your tax advisor and have your bookkeeper share financial reports directly with key business members. By integrating them as a key team member, you will get better results and they will perform better.
By making a few adjustments in the way you think about your team, your carefully chosen bookkeeper will not only perform your general bookkeeping tasks, but also contribute to the profitability of your business.
